Origins

The Japanese Akita breed was first developed. The breed was originally developed for protection as well as a hunting dog. The Akita breed was originally reserved for Japan's Imperial family members and leaders in the past. The breed became popular in the rest of the country.

The Akita was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1955 and classified in the miscellaneous class until 1972 after which the AKC approved the breed standard and moved the Akita's categorization to working dog.

Akitas can grow as big as humans and are often larger than humans. Once fully grown, male Akitas can weigh between 100-130 lbs and females between 70-100 pounds.
